This is the series that leads into Fujisawa-sensei's better known series Great Teacher Onizuka. Shonan Junai Gumi is the high school life story about Onizuka Eikichi and Danma Ryuuji, two guys that form the fearful gang of Oni Baku ("Devil Explosion"). Eikichi and Ryuuji are two very horny and very virgin male teenagers. Any sexual proposal by a lovely lady turns these two tough guys into perverts that'll do anything to get the girl into bed. Or at least, that's how they seem. Once they do get the ladies into bed, their chivalrous nature takes over. Thus the reason for being virgins (even though they do get plenty of chances). Besides the series being one big sex joke, there is also a ton of fighting. Eikichi and Ryuuji aren't infamous without reason. Despite being out numbered and having numerous wounds or broken bones, these two keep fighting until they score the win. They also tend to have extremely cheesy plans to get themselves out of trouble. While others may believe Eikichi and Ryuuji are the definition of stupid, they only see one side of the duo. They act silly and without thinking many times, but when out of the spotlight, they actually have simple and yet profound ideas. While GTO appears one of the craziest manga series out there, it's only a reflection of the series before it. "Whacked" is the best description for Shonan Junai Gumi. The manga I have (thus the ISBN numbers to the side) are for the "special" editions which are huge. About 350 pages per manga. I haven't read the entire series yet, but I've enjoyed what I've read ... when other people aren't around. DO NOT read this series if you have issues with sexual type situations, because that's every other page in this series. I find it hilarious, but others may find it offensive. But if you enjoy GTO, this is a definite must buy. It's great seeing where Onizuka-sensei and Ryuuji came from. I'm still reeling from how Ryuuji once acted just like Eikichi. Rating - 7 |
